Helping Blood Counts During Cancer Treatments

Red Blood and Hemoglobin

Plant Based Foods and Grains with Varing Amounts of Iron

Although eating foods with iron can help increase red blood cells during cancer treatment, it is wise to remember that eating too much iron can also be unhealthy. Please ask your physician to show you your blood test results which should monitor your red blood counts and hemoglobin levels.

Buy organic foods whenever possible. Iron absorption can be increased by eating foods with vitamin C along with foods containing iron. Cooking food in iron cookware may increase the absorption of iron.

White Blood and the Immune System

The white blood cells are a major part of the immune system that fights disease in the body. Eat 5-10 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables every day. Be sure to include fruits and vegetables of every color (orange, yellow, dark green, red, white, and purple). Shitake and Maitake mushrooms are also good if they are available in your area. Cook with garlic and ginger several times a week. Buy organic fruits and vegetables whenever possible. Wash all fruits and vegetables throughly. Shakes, smoothies and soups containing fruits and vegetables can be both delicious and nutritious if a person cannot digest solid food. Do not eat too much sugar or too many processed foods. Processed sugar can limit the benefits of the fruits and vegetables on the immune system. Please ask your physician to show you your blood test results which should monitor your white blood counts.
